SAULT STE. MARIE – Eastern Upper Peninsula and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, junior high and high school students interested in competing at the college level are encouraged to attend Lake Superior State University’s inaugural Recruit Day Open House from 5:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, at the Norris Center.
The LSSU Department of Athletics and LSSU Admissions Office are opening their doors to students and parents who have questions regarding intercollegiate athletics recruiting and eligibility. Recruit Day is geared for those who have an interest in attending LSSU or have general questions about the NCAA recruiting process and guidelines.
“LSSU Admissions and the athletic department are pleased to offer this great opportunity for students interested in continuing their athletic careers in college,” LSSU Director of Athletics Kris Dunbar said. “We hope students take advantage of this educational night to help them pursue their dreams of playing intercollegiate athletics.”
Following registration and brief introductions from Dunbar and LSSU President Tom Pleger, representatives from LSSU Admissions, Financial Aid and NCAA Compliance will give short presentations and answer questions. LSSU Compliance Officer Jennifer Constantino will outline NCAA recruiting rules and the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Following a short campus tour, LSSU student-athletes will serve on a panel to discuss their own experiences with the recruiting process and choosing Lake Superior State with students. Dunbar, Constantino and LSSU women’s basketball coach Kristen Rogers will conduct a similar panel geared specifically for parents of prospective student-athletes. Coming in with varied backgrounds, they will offer professional insights on recruiting services, how to involve high school coaches, school guidance counselors and travel coaches in the recruiting process, varsity vs. junior varsity competitive opportunities, and scholarship variations at the NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III levels.
“The NCAA provides much of this information online, but we have found from talking to high school representatives that most young athletes and their parents don’t know to look for it,” Dunbar said. “We have always made ourselves available to answer questions about the recruiting process no matter what school an area student plans to attend or what sport they plan to play. LSSU, with Division I hockey and 12 Division II sports, offers its own unique brand. We look forward to bringing students and parents on campus and encourage them to take advantage of the knowledge we can share with them.”
