Preview: Women's Tennis Looks to Finish GLIAC Regular Season Strong

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State women's tennis team will continue its weeklong homestand this weekend as the team hosts the Ferris State Bulldogs on Friday, April 16 and the Grand Valley State University Lakers on Saturday, April 17 in the Student Activity Center in the Norris Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The team will then close out the regular season of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Monday, April 19 at the Gates Tennis Center in Houghton, Mich. against the Michigan Tech Huskies. All three matches are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. starts.  

Through the first seven matches of the season, the Lakers hold a 2-5 overall record and a 1-4 record in conference play. Last weekend, the women's team played matches against the Northwood Timberwolves, Saginaw Valley State Cardinals, and Wayne State Warriors. Prior to last weekend's contests, the Lakers had not played a match since Saturday, March 20 as COVID-19 protocols went into effect within the Laker tennis program.

The Lakers are coming off a hard-fought 4-3 loss against the Wayne State Warriors at home on Monday, April 12. After dropping the doubles point, the Lakers clawed back with three wins in singles play. Milena Baigorria, Muskaan Ranjan, and Claudia Sole each won their matches for the Lakers. 

Lake Superior State's first opponent of the weekend will be the nationally ranked Ferris State Bulldogs, who enter the match as the GLIAC's last undefeated team in conference play. The Bulldogs have compiled a 11-1 overall record this season and a 6-0 mark in GLIAC competition. Ferris State is coming off of a 4-3 win over Grand Valley State on Wednesday, April 14. 

The Lakers will then host the Grand Valley State Lakers in the team's second conference match-up of the weekend. The GVSU Lakers have totaled a 10-4 overall record and a 5-2 record in GLIAC play with the team's most recent match ending in a 4-3 loss against the Ferris State Bulldogs on Wednesday. 

In the team's final regular season match of the 2021 spring season, the Lakers will travel to Houghton, Mich. to take on the Michigan Tech Huskies on Monday, April 19. The Huskies have totaled a 3-6 overall record and a 3-2 GLIAC mark this season. In the team's last outing, the Huskies dropped a 4-3 decision to Wayne State.
