Women's Tennis Drops Close Match against Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team fell in a match against the Michigan Tech Huskies on Monday, April 19 by a final score of 4-3 at the Gates Tennis Center in Houghton, Mich. Through ten matches this season, the Lakers hold a 2-8 overall record and a 1-7 record in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Lakers took the doubles point against the Huskies as all three pairs won their matches. Nadege Koua and Milena Baigorria, the team's top doubles pair, won their match by a score of 6-2 while LSSU's second pairing of Claudia Sole and Keegan Malpass won by the same score. Julia Fraile Raton and Muskaan Ranjan won the third match by a score of 6-4.

In the top singles match, Koua would win the match decisively with an opening set win of 6-0 and sealed the match win with a 6-2 score in the second set. Fraile Raton would be the only other Laker to record a singles victory as she defeated her opponent in the tiebreaking third set.

The second and third singles match-ups between the Lakers and Huskies both were tight, requiring a third set to determine the winners. Baigorria, playing in the No. 2 spot for the Lakers, won the opening set by a score of 6-4 but fell in the next two sets. Ranjan, the Lakers No. 3 singles player, also won the first set in her match and dropped the second two sets to her opponent. Sole and Malpass each fell in two set matches to the Huskies.
