Preview: Laker Volleyball Set for Action-Packed Weekend Against Three GLIAC Opponents

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University volleyball program is set to play three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matches against teams that are all receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll this coming weekend. They will start off by traveling to Marquette, Mich. to play against the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., on the very next day the Lakers will be facing the Michigan Tech Huskies in Houghton, Mich. at 2 p.m.; finally, on Sept. 19 at 3 p.m., the Lakers will host the Ferris State Bulldogs in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

The Wildcats are coming off of a 2-0 start in the GLIAC and hold a 9-1 overall record. As a team, they boast a total of 503 kills after ten matches with Jacqueline Smith and Lizzy Stark leading the scoring with over 100 kills each, and Smith's 176 kills and 4.51 kills per set are the most among all GLIAC players. Meanwhile, reigning GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week, Alli Yacko, ranks third in the GLIAC with 159 digs.

The Huskies on the other hand have started off conference play 0-2 with an overall of 6-3, recently dropping out of the AVCA top-25. With 251 assists, setter Lina Espejo-Ramirez runs a balanced offense, and Jullian Kuizenga leads the team in kills with 89 out of the 360 earned as a team.

The Bulldogs have rebounded after starting off their season 0-6 with a 4-match winning streak, including a 2-0 start in the GLIAC. With her league-leading 387 assists, the offence runs through setter Kaylee Maat, and they will put their balanced offense to the test against all three teams from Michigan's Upper Peninsula over the weekend as they will also face Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan prior to their match against the Lakers on Sunday.
