Laker Women's Tennis Have Strong Showing at IUPUI Fall Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team competed at the IUPUI Fall invitational in Indianapolis, Ind. over the weekend, including reigning Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Freshman of the Year, Maddie Whip (Sydney, Australia), opening her sophomore season by defeating the top-ranked player in the Midwest Region from a season ago in the University of Indianapolis' Anna Novikova in the opening round and Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat del Valles, Spain) going a perfect 6-0 as an individual at the event.

 

Singles

The Lakers had a pair of strong performances in the opening round of the singles bracket. Fraile Raton came away with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Laura Tomal of Holy Cross, but it was Whip that came away with the biggest win of the afternoon with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Novikova of Indianapolis who finished the previous season as the No. 1 ranked player in the Midwest Region. 

On the second day of competition, Marilou Cote (Levis, Canada) opened up the day with a 7-6(5), 6-1 victory over IUPUI's Lampman, and Valentina Parodi (Italy) followed that up with a 6-4 6-4 win over Dell, also of IUPUI. Fraile Raton and Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina) were then able to earn another pair of wins over players from the host team with Fraile Raton coming back after dropping her first set 5-7 to earn a hard-fought 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory. Riley Gilman (Holt, Mich.) was able to continue the strong day for the Lakers with a 6-0 6-4 win over Hawkins of Holy Cross before Ana Ossio won back-to-back matches against Ruediger of Holy Cross and IUPUI's Krakowski. Whip continued her impressive individual start to the season with a 6-4 6-2 victory, and Tayla Brasier (Bathurst, Australia) earned a 6-2 6-3 win of her own. Then, Fraile Raton was able to wrap up the singles competition with a 6-3 7-5 win to complete a perfect 3-0 showing in singles at the IUPUI Fall invitational

 

Doubles

Fraile Raton and Oviedo opened up the doubles competition with a 6-3 win over IUPUI's Dell and Krakowski, and the pair were able to build on their success in their second match of the tournament by taking down the duo of Egas and Hawkins from Holy Cross by an impressive score of 6-1. Meanwhile, Whip and Parodi were able to shake off an opening-round loss, to claim a 6-4 victory in their second doubles match of the opening day.

Oviedo and Fraile Raton came away with the only doubles victory of the second day of the invitational for LSSU with a 6-1 win to finish the day, moving the duo to a perfect 3-0 in doubles competition at IUPUI while Fraile Raton finished the weekend 6-0 across both singles and doubles as an individual.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they travel to Allendale, Mich. for the Women's ITA Fall Regional Tournament.
