Laker Women's Basketball Fall to Cardinals on the Road

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University women's basketball program (5-12, 2-7 GLIAC) fell to the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (10-9, 5-4 GLIAC) by a final score of 70-50 on Saturday.

The Cardinals got themselves off to an early lead, but the Lakers were able to stay within striking distance with multiple baskets from Mattison Rayman (Otsego, Mich.) and Margot Woughter (Traverse City, Mich.). LSSU would then cut the lead back to single-digits late in the opening quarter with a 9-0 run that featured a three-pointer from true freshman Grace Bradford (Glen Arbor, Mich.).

The defenses would then step up in the second quarter, only allowing eight more points from each team going into the halftime break.

The Cardinals struck early in the second half with a 12-0 run, but Amanda Roach (Hartland, Mich.) was there to answer with a three. However, despite eight fourth quarter points from Woughter, Saginaw Valley would hold on for the 70-50 victory.

Despite the loss, Rayman led the way offensively with 17 points while shooting 73 percent from the field, and she also led all players in rebounding with eight. Woughter and Bradford also finished scoring double-digits with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Lakers return to action on Thursday, Jan. 26 when they host the Northern Michigan Wildcats in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
