Laker Women's Basketball Fall to Wildcats Despite Strong Opening Quarter

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team (2-7, 1-2 GLIAC) fell on the road to the Northern Michigan Wildcats (7-4, 3-1 GLIAC) by a final score of 72-64 on Sunday.

The Lakers would strike quickly as a three-pointer from Margot Woughter (Traverse City, Mich.) helped her team to an early 7-3 lead. The Wildcats would go on a 5-0 scoring burst of their own, but true freshman Grace Bradford (Glen Arbor, Mich.) immediately responded with a wide open three of her own on the other end. Bradford continued the attack, converting an and-one for six first quarter points to propel the Lakers to a 9-0 run. Mattison Rayman (Otsego, Mich.) would then find Woughter for her second three-pointer of the game to close out the opening quarter of action with the Lakers leading 22-13.

CeCe Hacker (Omaha, Neb.) would get the Lakers going in the second quarter with a three-pointer to maintain a double-digit lead. The Wildcats were able to crawl back to within four, but Rayman was able to score down low after a Northern Michigan turnover before knocking down a pair of free throws to extend the Lakers' lead back out to eight. However, the Wildcats would make one final push late in the half as the Lakers would go into the locker room leading 31-28.

Rayman opened up the second half with a pair of free throws, but the Wildcats countered with an 8-0 run to take the lead. Both teams would then battle on their way to a 40-40 ballgame, but Northern Michigan would push back ahead with a 7-1 run before ultimately closing out the quarter with a 50-45 lead.

The Wildcats would score four straight points to open the fourth quarter, but Rayman was able to get to the free throw line as she had consistently done throughout the entire game before finding Hacker for a three to cut back to within four. However, despite a three-pointers from Brittany Bowman (Kingsley, Mich.) and Woughter, Northern Michigan would ultimately hold on to claim the victory by a final score of 72-64.

Despite the loss, Rayman would lead the way offensively with 24 points, and Woughter would join her in double-digit scoring with 15 points of her own. Meanwhile, Bradford led all players in rebounding with 14.

The Lakers return to action on Thursday, Dec. 15 when they host Illinois-Springfield in Bud Cooper Gymnasium with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
