Laker Women's Basketball Fall to Findlay in Season Opener

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team (0-1) fell on the road to the Findlay Oilers (1-0) in the first game of the GLIAC/G-MAC Crossover by a final score of 78-70 on Friday.

The Lakers came out of the gate strong, opening the game with an 11-2 run that featured a pair of three-pointers from sophomore guard CeCe Hacker (Omaha, Neb.), but the Oilers responded with a 12-2 run of their own. Jaden Wilder (Manton, Mich.) tied the game at 16-16 at the free throw line, and after a Findlay three-point shot, senior Margot Woughter was able to score in the final moments of the opening quarter to keep the game within one.

The Oilers would strike first in the second quarter, but Kelly Olthof (Ferrysburg, Mich.) was able to hit a three to keep the score close. The Oilers responded with a three ball of their own, but Wilder and freshman Gracey Metz (Hartland, Mich.) combined for a 5-0 scoring burst to tie up the score at 26-26. However, the Oilers were able to close out the half on a 19-6 scoring run to take a 47-34 lead going into the break.

The Oilers would use an 8-2 run early in the third quarter to extend their lead to as many as 21 points before Grace Bradford (Glen Arbor, Mich.) beat the buzzer with a layup as Findlay led 66-48 going into the fourth quarter.

The Lakers were able to find some success in the fourth quarter, hitting multiple threes on their way to a 12-2 run to rally back into the game, but it would not be enough, as the Oilers were able to fend off the Lakers' late attack to close out the game with a final score of 78-70.

Despite the loss, Woughter led all players in scoring with 17 points. Meanwhile, senior Mattison Rayman (Otsego, Mich.) finished with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double while Bradford came one point shy of a double-double of her own with a nine-point, 11-rebound performance.

The Lakers return to action when they take on the Northwood Timberwolves in the second game of the GLIAC/G-MAC Crossover on Saturday with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
