Laker Cross Country Completes First Race of the Season at Yooper Skirmish

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's and women's cross country programs competed at the Yooper Skirmish, hosted by Michigan Tech, on Saturday.

 

Men

Ethan Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich) led the way for the Lakers in the men's 8k race with a time of 28:21.10 to place 19th overall, approximately 23 seconds shy of his personal best while being impacted with the above average hills of the course. His brother, Aaron Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) would cross the finish line shortly thereafter with a time of 28:44.94. Reese Camp (Highland, Mich.) would finish the race next for LSSU just past the 29 minute mark, and Ryan O'Neill (Perry, Mich.) pushed through less than 20 seconds later with a time of 29:21.02. True freshman Sam Markle (Berrien Springs, Mich.) was able to complete the first race of his collegiate career, and first of a distance greater than five kilometers, with a time of 29:56.35, and Skylar Williams (Battle Creek, Mich.) made every stride count late, sprinting across the finish line to narrowly edge past a nearby Husky, passing him by a difference of half of a second. Roy Bowman (Jerome, Mich.) and Riley Sponseller (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) rounded out the lineup with respective times of 31:13.65 and 35:51.19.

 

Women

In the women's 6k race, Sydney Kapushinski (Imlay City, Mich.) led her team with a time of 26:28.85 which was good enough to earn her a 14th place finish overall. True freshman Nora Smoes (Reed City, Mich.) would then cross the finish line shortly after with a time of 27:19.09 in her collegiate debut to place 15th. Also making their debut was redshirt-freshman Julie Sheehy (Walkerville, Mich.) who spent the previous year at LSSU preparing for this moment, and she would push herself to a 16th place finish with a time of 27:33.83. Kara Mosher (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) along with freshmen Keira Lamming (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Olivia Peter (Unionville, Mich.) would then cross the finish line within a span of thirty seconds of one another with respective times of 28:15.00, 28:29.40, and 28:42.30, respectively. Sarah McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.), who was also making her collegiate debut, Gwen Phillips (Cadillac, Mich.), and Olivia Stevens (Grand Haven, Mich.) would then round out the lineup with respective times of 29:56.81, 30:29.99, and 31:36.88.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 when they travel to Midland, Mich.for the Northwood Invite.
