Lakers Scare League-Leading Bulldogs in the Soo but Come Up Just Short in Upset Bid

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's tennis program (6-7, 1-4 GLIAC) narrowly fell to the No. 19 Ferris State Bulldogs (13-3, 5-0 GLIAC) by a final score of 4-3 as their upset bid came up just short on Friday.

The Lakers got off to a hot start in doubles play as Raul Velasco Garcia (Barcelona, Spain) and Jordi Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat del Valles) wasted no time taking the No. 2 doubles match by a score of 6-2, but the Bulldogs answered right back by claiming a victory at the No. 1 spot. With the doubles point on the line, all eyes would turn to the No. 3 match and the pairing of Xavier Vicent Navarro (Cocentaina, Spain) and Lluc Limongi Ollers (Mallorca, Spain). Both sides would battle throughout the match, and a tiebreaker would be needed to determine the winner. However, Ferris State was able to survive three-straight match points to steal the early 1-0 advantage in a 9-7 tiebreak.

Limongi would tie up the score after battling his way to a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the No. 2 doubles match, but the Bulldogs would strike back with a 7-5, 7-5 win at the No. 3 match, despite Maxence Hamon (Montreal, Quebec) giving his opponent all he could handle. Ferris State would then push the Lakers to the brink after coming back from down a set against Fraile to take the No. 4 spot by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, but the Lakers would not go out so easily. Senior Aaron Osmond (Cheltenham, U.K.) breathed life into the Laker faithful with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory at the top singles position, reasserting himself as one of the top players in the GLIAC, and both Vicent and Velasco would shake off opening set losses by taking the second. However, with the match on the line, Velasco was able to win his third set by a score of 6-2, but Vicent would fall just short as the No. 2 ranked team in the midwest region survived a scare in the Soo.

The Lakers return to action when they host the Grand Valley State Lakers on Saturday, April 15 with the first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
