PREVIEW: Laker Hockey Set for Road Trip at Bemidji State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (7-8-1, 4-5-1 CCHA) are set to take on the Bemidji State Beavers (5-9-0, 4-4-0 CCHA) for a two-game CCHA road series on Friday and Saturday.

  • The Lakers lead the all-time series between the two programs by a narrow margin of 40-39-6 after sweeping both games earlier this season in Taffy Abel Arena. The all-time series also features four bouts in the NAIA national championship games with the Lakers having been the victors in 1974.
  • In the prior two contests between these two programs, the Lakers built up a 3-0 lead in the opening period of game one, but the Beavers crawled back to tie up the score and send the game into overtime before Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) scored the game-winner two and a half minutes into the extra frame. On the following day, LSSU came away with a dominant 5-1 victory with seven different Lakers earning at least one point on the night.
  • Bemidji State has been a much tougher team to face in the Sanford Center, posting a 4-3-0 record in their home building
  • The Beavers are coming off of a bye week after falling in both games on the road at No. 1 North Dakota, and the Lakers are looking to bounce back after only coming away with one point against Minnesota State after the opening game went to a shootout.
  • Bemidji State is led by the duo of Kyle Looft (5-11-16) and Lleyton Roed (8-4-12) with Jackson Jutting also reaching double-digit points so far this season (10).
  • Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) and Roed are currently tied for the league-lead in game-winning goals with three each.
  • Last season, three out of four matchups between the Lakers and the Beavers were decided in the final seconds with the first game in Bemidji requiring overtime as well as both games in Sault Ste. Marie having a game-winner scored within the final 20 seconds of regulation.
