PREVIEW: Laker Hockey Set for Weekend Series at St. Thomas

PREVIEW: Laker Hockey Set for Weekend Series at St. Thomas

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (6-6-0, 3-3 CCHA) is set to travel to take on the St. Thomas Tommies (6-5-1, 4-2 CCHA) for a two-game weekend series.

  • The Lakers narrowly lead the all-time series between the two programs 5-4-0, but the Tommies claimed three of four battles between the two teams last season, including both games in Mendota Heights.
  • The Lakers have gotten off to a strong start, but they have been a better team inside Taffy Abel Arena with a 4-2 record with their only two road victories having came in Upstate New York. Meanwhile, the Tommies have also performed better at home with a 3-1-1 record at St. Thomas Ice Arena compared to a 3-3-0 mark on the road.
  • So far this season, both the Lakers and the Tommies have faced the same three CCHA opponents in identical orders with the Tommies having played Bemidji State, Northern Michigan, and Bowling Green exactly one week before the Lakers did prior to last weekend's bye. However, the Tommies came away with sweeps against the Wildcats and Falcons while the Lakers managed to sweep a Bemidji State team that bested St. Thomas in both contests.
  • The Tommies currently sit at second in the CCHA standings, one point behind Bemidji State, while the Lakers are tied with Minnesota State for fourth with eight points.
  • St. Thomas has had a balanced attack with nine Tommies having recorded at least five points, highlighted by Lucas Wahlin, Liam Malmquist, and Cooper Gay who have all notched at least ten.
  • The Lakers are led by Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) who is averaging over a point per game, and he enters the weekend with the national lead in goals (12) while also being tied for the national lead in points (22). Westcott has also paired with Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) and Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) to form the most productive line in the league with a combined 40 points between the trio on the season.
  • Whalin and Gay will be looking to put a lot of pressure on the Lakers' goaltenders as they rank as two of the top five in the league in shots on goal.
  • Laker goalie, William Hakansson (Oskarshamn, Sweden) is coming off of his first career start in which he made 30 saves on his way to his first career win between the pipes.
  • Milburn capped off a six-game point streak after scoring the game-winner in overtime on Nov. 3 against Bemidji State.
  • Laker captain Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) capped off a career-high six-game point streak against Bowling Green.
