Laker Hockey Sweeps Ferris State With 4-2 Victory

BIG RAPIDS, Mich, - The Lake Superior State University hockey program (9-23-2, 8-17-1 CCHA) came away with a 4-2 victory over the Ferris State Bulldogs (12-18-4, 9-14-3 CCHA) on Saturday to wrap up the regular season with a sweep and eliminating the Bulldogs from home ice contention.

Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) opened up the scoring just over four minutes into the game with assists from defenseman Jared Kucharek (Royal Oak, Mich.) and senior Brandon Puricelli (Ellisville, Mo.), but the Bulldogs responded as Mitch Deelstra tied up the score about a minute and a half later. Captain Louis Boudon (Grenoble, France) would then continue to press the early Laker attack with his tenth goal of the season after being set up by Jake Willets (Monroe, Mich.) and Puricelli, but the Bulldogs would once again answer, this time in the form of a power play goal from Bradley Marek to knot up the score at 2-2. The defenses would then hold as both teams went into the first intermission after a wild opening period of action.

Both teams battled in the second period, but nine saves from Seth Eisele (Lake Elmo, Minn.) would help keep the score tied at 2-2 going into the second intermission.

Then, at the 6:01 mark in the third period, Jacob Bengtsson (Stockholm, Sweden) was able to steal away a loose puck from the Bulldogs and find Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) who did the rest, scoring his team-leading 12th goal of the season and the eventual game-winner as Westcott iced the game away in the closing seconds by firing the puck into an empty Bulldog net to secure the Lakers' first sweep of the season and build momentum going into the Mason Cup Playoffs.

The Lakers outshot Ferris State 23-22, and Eisele picked up his third win between the pipes this season after making 20 saves.

The Lakers will now turn their attention to the postseason as they await the results of Michigan Tech and Minnesota State to determine their opponent for the opening round of the Mason Cup Playoffs.
