Preview: Laker Hockey Set to Host No. 5 Michigan for Great Lake State Weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University hockey program is set to host the No. 5 ranked Michigan Wolverines for a two-game non-conference series at Taffy Abel Arena for Great Lake State Weekend with the first puck drop scheduled for 7:07 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21. The Alumi Association will introduce its award recipients during the first intermission on Friday, and the 1972 and 1992 championship teams will be honored on Saturday.

The Lakers are currently coming off of a shootout victory over the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha that was officially ruled as a 4-4 tie.

 Stories to watch:

  • Eleven different Lakers have earned a point after the first two games against Nebraska-Omaha with senior captain Louis Boudon (Grenoble, France) and junior forward Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) each having two.

  • The Lakers' penalty kill unit has fended off 5-6 of their opponent's power plays this season while the Lakers have capitalized on 30% of their extra-man opportunities (3-10).

  • Ethan Langenegger (Kamloops, B.C.) came up big for the Lakers, stopping all five shots that he faced in overtime as well as all three of Omaha's shootout attempts.

  • The Lakers currently hold a record of 49-70-8 in the all-time series against the Wolverines.

  • In the most recent meeting, Michigan won both of the two-game series in Ann Arbor, Mich. in Oct. 2021.

  • The Wolverines were selected to finish third at the Big Ten Preseason Poll. 

  • Michigan goaltender Erik Portillo received Big Ten weekly honors after having recorded 57 saves in a series split with No. 9 Boston University.

  • Portillo entered the season ranked in the top-5 among active players in both goaltending wins and goals-against average. 

  • The Wolverines are currently in their 100th season with varsity status, and they hold NCAA records for consecutive NCAA Men's Division I Hockey appearances and Frozen Four appearances.

  • The Wolverines are tied with Minnesota as the youngest team by average, 20.9 years, in NCAA Division I.

  • Michigan returns Second Team All-American defender Luke Hughes who has already earned a point in three of four games played while blocking at least two shots in all four contests.
