Preview: Laker Hockey Set to Open Regular Season Against Nebraska-Omaha

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State hockey program is set to officially open the regular season on Friday when they host the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha for a two-game series with the first puck drop scheduled for 7:07 p.m.

Stories to watch:

  • Lake Superior State enters the season looking to build upon last year's record of 18-18-1 that ended in Game 3 of the CCHA Mason Cup Quarterfinals.

  • Lakers Head Coach Damon Whitten enters his ninth season behind the bench in Sault Ste. Marie in 2022-23. In May 2021, Whitten agreed to terms on a six-year contract, solidifying the program through the 2027-28 season. The Laker head coach has led the team to a 117-151-28 record, with playoff appearances in all but one season. Whitten recorded his 100th career win as a head coach on Oct. 2 with the Lakers 4-3 victory over No. 17 Omaha, and he led the Lakers to the WCHA Tournament Championship and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 25 years in 2021.

  • Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) and Logan Jenuwine (Romeo, Mich.) will look to have strong seasons after earning points in all three preseason exhibition games.

  • The Lakers are 10-17-5 in the all-time series against Omaha, the former CCHA rival from 1999 to 2010.

  • The Lakers opened the 2021-22 season on the road at Omaha, and both teams split the series with the Lakers taking the season opener against the then No. 17 Mavericks after Puricelli slotted in the game-winner in overtime.

  • The Mavericks currently hold a record of 0-2-0 after being swept by Niagara, but they had previously defeated No. 5 Minnesota State 7-2 in an exhibition contest.

  • The Mavericks boast the active national assist leader coming into the season in Tyler Weiss who entered the season with 67.

  • The Lakers have one of the tallest and oldest teams in NCAA Division I hockey by average height (6'0.8") and age (22.9) while the Mavericks find themselves near the bottom in both categories (5'11.3", T58th; 21.4, T51st).

  • The Lakers and the Mavericks face off in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. for the first time since Jan. 2010 in the Mavericks' last season as a member of the old CCHA. The Lakers would earn a sweep in that series with victories of 2-1 and 5-4. Laker alum Will Action totaled five points in the series (2G, 3A).
