Laker Men's Basketball Close Out G-MAC/GLIAC Challenge With Win Over Northwood

PAINESVILLE, Ohio. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's basketball team (2-0) came away with a 78-65 victory over former GLIAC rival Northwood (0-2) on Saturday.

Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) opened up the scoring with a three as both teams battled early, but a three-pointer from Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) opened up an 11-0 Laker run to go up 24-12. The Timberwolves were able to come back and take a 31-30 lead, but back-to-back threes from Soper had the Lakers leading 40-37 going into the halftime break.

Early in the second half, Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) would sink a pair of baskets to propel the Lakers on another 11-0 run to extend the lead to 54-39. Northwood was able to get back to within single digits, but four points from Peter Nwoke (Lagos, Nigeria) held them at bay. Both teams would battle for the remainder of the game, but a slam dunk from Perkins in the final minute put the game away, giving LSSU a 78-65 win and improving their record to 2-0 on the season.

Soper led the way offensively with 22 points while hitting on six of his eight three-point attempts. Perkins notched 16 points of his own while also grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Meanwhile, Okerlund and Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.) each scored 11 points with Womack also adding a team-high seven assists, and Nwoke was the fifth and final Laker in double-digit scoring with 12 points off the bench.

The Lakers will now prepare to travel to take on last season's top seed in the Midwest Region when they face the Indianapolis Greyhounds on Saturday, Nov. 18 with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
