Lakers Defeat Thunderbirds 69-47 on Friday

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State women's basketball defeated Algoma University 69-47 in a nonconference game on Friday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Lake Superior State (4-6) jumped out to a 20-12 lead over Algoma (3-8) at the end of the first quarter. The Lakers were then edged 16-15 in the second quarter, but led 35-28 at halftime. Lake State pulled away in the third quarter – outscoring Algoma 21-11 in the period to take a 56-39 lead into the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, the Lakers outscored the Thunderbirds 13-8 to make the final score 69-47 in favor of the Lakers.

Four Lakers scored in double figures in the win. They were: junior forward Lexie Khon (14 points), junior forward Morgan Villemure (12), sophomore guard Rebecca Villanueva (13) and junior guard Claire Radtke (10).

Algoma's Lauren MacPhee led all scorers with 17 points in the game. No other Thunderbird scored in double digits.

Lake Superior State shot 35.5 percent from the field, while limiting Algoma to 27.3 percent shooting.

The Lakers made 19-of-24 free throw attempts and the Thunderbirds converted 11-of-16.

LSSU closes out 2018 with a home game against Alma at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
