Khon Scores 23 but Lakers Edged by Greyhounds 68-59

Lakers' three-game winning streak snapped.

INDIANAPOLIS – Lexie Khon scored 23 points, but Lake Superior State women's basketball had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 68-59 road loss to the University of Indianapolis at Nicoson Hall on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite the loss, Lake Superior State (3-2) is off to its best start through five games since 2014-15 when the Lakers also started the season 3-2.

Lake Superior State was outscored by University of Indianapolis (3-2) 16-14 in the first quarter. Neither team scored for the first 2:48 of the game until the Lakers' Eileene Naniseni, a sophomore center, made the first basket of the game. The rest of the first quarter was filled with numerous lead changes. The Lakers trailed for most of the quarter but remained within striking distance as the deficit never grew to more than four points.

In the second quarter, the Lakers were outscored 16-15 and they trailed 32-29 at halftime. Lake Superior State went on a 13-5 run to start the quarter to take their largest lead of the game with the score 27-21 after a layup by sophomore guard Jenna Gregory with under five minutes remaining in the period. However, the Greyhounds answered back with an 11-2 run going into halftime. Khon, a junior forward, led the Lakers with 10 points in the first half.

The Lakers outscored the Greyhounds 17-16 in the third quarter to make the score 48-46 in favor of the Greyhounds. UIndy's lead grew to as many as six points with the score 35-29 one minute into the quarter. Lake State battled back with a 17-11 run to tie the game at 46-46 after a layup by junior forward Morgan Villemure with 46 seconds remaining in the quarter. UIndy scored the final two points of the quarter to make the score 48-46.  

In the fourth quarter, the Lakers were outscored 20-13 as the Greyhounds went on to win 68-59. Lake Superior State fought back and tied the game at 50-50 on a jump shot by Gregory with 6:36 remaining in regulation. However, the Greyhounds put together an 18-9 run to finish the game and hand the Lakers the defeat.

Khon led the Lakers in scoring with 23 points on 7-of-20 shooting, while making 9-of-13 free throw attempts. Khon also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots in 38 minutes played.

The Greyhounds' Laura Thomas led all players with 33 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the field. Thomas also made 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. Liz Alstot added 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line.

Lake Superior State shot 33.3 percent from the field in the game, while UIndy shot 41.8 percent.

The Lakers made 13-of-19 free throws and the Greyhounds made 21-of-28.

The Greyhounds held a 44-37 edge in rebounds.

With the loss, Lake Superior State had its three-game winning streak snapped. The winning streak was the program's longest since the 2014-15 season. 

The Lakers return to the court at Ashland at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 29.

The Lakers will play their first regular-season home game against Saginaw Valley State University on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
