Recap: Tennis Closes Season at GLIAC Tournament

Midland, MI - The Lake Superior State men's and women's tennis teams finished the 2022 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament season in Midland, MI on April 29th and 30th at the Midland Tennis Center.

Women's Team

In the first round of the tournament on Friday afternoon, the No. 5 seeded Lake Superior State women's team pulled off an exciting victory over the No. 4 seeded Ferris State Bulldogs with a 4-3 victory. 

The Bulldogs took the doubles point to start the afternoon, but the single matchups would be where the Lakers claimed victory. The Lakers would go on to claim four of the singles matches. GLIAC Women's Tennis Freshman of the Year, Maddie Whip claimed the win in two sets over her opponent with scores of 6-0 and 7-5. In the No. 5 matchup, Claudia Sole forced a win in 3 sets, with the scores of 3-6, 6-2, and 6-4. The No. 6 matchup for Julia Raton was another match forced to 3 with final scores of 3-6, 7-6, and 6-3. 

In an exciting finish for the Lakers, Muskaan Ranjan won the last point to secure the win over the Bulldogs. Ranjan finished the day with final scores of 4-6, 7-5, and 6-4. With Ranjan's victory, the Lakers would move onto round two on Saturday, April 30th to face the No. 1 seeded Northwood Timberwolves. 

The women's team would fall 0-4 to the No. 1 seeded Timberwolves on Saturday, ultimately ending their tournament run. 

 

Men's Team

On Friday, April 30th, the No. 6 seeded Lake Superior State men's team fell 0-4 to the No. 3 seeded Grand Valley State Lakers. 

Doubles partners Juho Kantola and Aaron Osmond took the solo victory over the Lakers with a score of 6-1. The GVSU Lakers took the doubles point, as well as the singles points ultimately ending the Lakers season on Friday.
