PREVIEW: Lakers to Host Augustana for First Ever Meeting With the Vikings

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program (12-16-1, 9-11-1 CCHA) are set to host future CCHA opponent Augustana (10-15-3) for a two-game series in Taffy Abel Arena this weekend.

  • The Lakers are set to host the Augustana Vikings for the first time in Taffy Abel Arena this weekend.
  • LSSU enters with a 12-16-1 overall record with a 9-11-1 mark in conference play, and they will be looking to bounce back after falling in their most recent contests at Bowling Green.
  • The Vikings enter with a record of 10-15-3 after picking up a series sweep at home over St. Thomas.
  • The Lakers will be Augustana's final CCHA opponent of the season as the Vikings complete their hybrid league schedule in preparation for becoming the ninth full member of the CCHA in the 2025-26 season. Augustana is currently 6-5-2 against CCHA foes which would have netted them 22 league points if their games counted toward conference standings.
  • The Vikings are led in scoring by Ryan Naumovski with 21 points (6G, 15A), and Luke Mobley is not far behind with 18 points on a team-leading 11 goals to go along with 7 assists.

  • Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) and Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.) lead the Lakers in point scoring with 29 and 27 points, respectively. Westcott scored a pair in the opening game this past weekend at Bowling Green while Milburn notched a goal and two assists on the weekend.
  • The Lakers continue to sit as the top offense in the CCHA with 3.10 goals per game, but it has been the defense that has determined the results more often than not as the Lakers are 12-1-1 when holding their opponents to two goals or less.
  • The Vikings' average 2.7 goals per game which would rank them fifth when compared to the rest of the CCHA, but their 3.4 goals allowed per game would net them near the bottom of the league.
  • The LSSU penalty kill unit has been one of the best in the nation this season, but they have fallen back to 9th in the country at 85.4% after allowing three power play goals last weekend at Bowling Green.
  • The Laker power play unit also has the top success rate in the CCHA at 23.3%.
  • Ross Roloson (Woodbury, Minn.) (4G, 8A), Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) (1G, 11A), and Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) (3G, 9A) are tied for the team lead in points by defensemen with 12 each.
