PREVIEW: Laker Hockey Set to Battle Bowling Green in the Buckeye State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey program is set to travel to Bowling Green, Ohio for a road battle between two of the longest-tenured members of the original CCHA with the Falcons being one of three founding members in 1971 and LSSU joining for year two.

  • The two longest-tenured active members of the CCHA are set to meet for the 187th time on Friday.
  • LSSU enters the weekend with a one-point grasp of third place in the CCHA standings (28pts) with Bemidji State and Michigan Tech right behind them with 27 points each. Meanwhile, after picking up six points last weekend, The Falcons despite still sitting in seventh place, have closed the gap to only being three-points outside of home-ice entering the weekend.
  • The Falcons lead the all-time series between the two programs 92-80-14, including a series split in Sault Ste. Marie in November.
  • Senior Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) finished the weekend with six point (3G, 3A) the last time these two teams faced off, including the game-winning goal in overtime to end game two.
  • LSSU is coming off of a bye week after a series split against Michigan Tech that saw the Laker defense hold the Huskies to just a single goal each night, and Easton Hesse (Beaumont, Alta.) was named CCHA Goaltender of the Week after stopping 67 shots for a save percentage of .971.
  • The Falcons are winners of three of their last four to reach a .500 conference record, including sweeping Ferris State in Big Rapids this past weekend. In their first game against the Bulldogs, Bowling Green entered the third period trailing 3-1, but they went on to score three unanswered to win the game 4-3 in regulation.
  • The LSSU penalty kill unit continues to flex its muscles, ranking fourth nationally at 87.8%.
  • The Laker power play unit has also proven to be vital to their success, scoring on 23.2% of their opportunities which is the top mark in the CCHA.
  • The Lakers will be looking to get their offense rolling again as the top-ranked scoring offence in the CCHA (3.15) has been held to three goals or less in their last four contests, but the Laker defense is not to be overlooked either as LSSU is 12-1-1 when holding their opponents to two goals or less.
  • The Falcons will look to out possess the Lakers in order to give themselves a chance. Bowling Green's Josh Nodler (.581) and Ethan Scardina (.563) rank second and third, respectively, in the CCHA in face-off winning percentage while the Lakers rank seventh as a team in the face-off circle.
  • Westcott is currently leading the team in goal scoring with 13 and points with 27.
  • Sophomore Connor Milburn capped off a six-game point streak after scoring the game-winner in overtime on Nov. 3 against Bemidji State.
  • Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) capped off a career-high six-game point streak the last time he faced Bowling Green.
  • All five Laker goals during the series at St. Thomas were scored by first-year players (Herrington, Batchelder x2, R. Roloson, & Piku).
  • Ross Roloson (Woodbury, Minn.) leads all Laker defensemen in scoring with 12 points (4G, 8A).
  • Seven different Lakers have recorded at least ten points so far this season, led by Westcott's 27. C. Milburn (24), Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) (19), Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) (19), Roy (18),  John Herrington (Hudson's Hope, B.C.) (16), R. Roloson (12), Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) (11), Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) (11), and Carter Batchelder (Savage, Minn.) (10) have also reached double-digit scoring.
  • Hesse made his season debut against Michigan Tech and came away with the best performance of his career, picking up his first career win while holding the Huskies to a single tally in each game with a GAA of 1.01 and a save percentage of .971. Hesse was named CCHA Goaltender of the Week as a result.
