Lakers Set to Play Parkside in GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State men's basketball begins Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament play on the road with a quarterfinals game against Parkside at 8:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday in Kenosha, Wisconsin. 

Last Time on the Court

Lake Superior State (15-11, 11-9 GLIAC) defeated Ferris State 86-66 on Thursday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. In their win over Ferris State, four Lakers scored in double figures: senior forward Blake Marquardt (26) sophomore forward Rog Stein (19 points), junior forward Malek Adams (11), and senior guard Tim Cairnduff (11). Marquardt also went 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. 

Team Leaders

Junior guard Malek Adams leads the Lakers in scoring average with 16.6 points per game on 49.5 percent shooting this season. Adams has scored in double figures in 19 of his 24 games played this season, including 10 games with at least 20 points. Adams scored a career-high 30 points at Ferris State on Jan. 26 in Big Rapids, Michigan. His most recent 20-point game was a 21-point performance in the Lakers' 77-66 win over then-No. 15 Ashland on Feb. 9 at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Adams has the eighth-highest scoring average in the GLIAC this season.Sophomore forward Rog Stein leads the team in rebounds per game (7.7) and steals per game (1.8), while averaging the second-most points per game (14.6). Stein also leads the team with six double-doubles on the season. His most recent double-double was a 13-point, 10-rebound performance at Parkside on Feb. 21. Senior guard Tim Cairnduff is third on the team in scoring average with 10.6 points per game. Cairnduff is also the team leader in assists per game (3.3).

All-Time Three-Point Shooter

Senior forward, Blake Marquardt leads the Lakers with 64 made three-pointers this season. A 44.8 percent career three-point shooter, Marquardt is tied with Jordan Dasuqi (2013-17) for eighth in program history with 205 made three-pointers in his career. Cameron McNary (1991-1995) is seventh with 216 made three-pointers.  

By the Numbers

Lake Superior State is averaging 80.8 points per game of offense, while holding its opponents to 75.3 points per game. LSSU is shooting 48.7 percent from the field, including 40.2 percent from three-point range. Lake State's opponents are shooting 44.9 percent overall and 34.2 percent from behind the three-point arc. The Lakers are averaging 17.0 assists per game compared to 12.3 turnovers.

Scouting Parkside

Parkside (15-11, 13-7 GLIAC) enters Tuesday's game as the No. 3 seed in the GLIAC tournament and has won its last three games. Redshirt senior forward Chavares Flanigan is the Rangers' team leader in points per game (13.9). The Lakers have lost both of their contests against the Rangers this season. In the first meeting between the two teams at Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Jan. 17, Parkside won 83-81. In their second meeting on Feb. 21 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Parkside won 60-58.
