Men's Basketball Travels to Play Northwood and Saginaw Valley

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State men's basketball travels downstate to face a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents this week. Lake Superior State (10-7, 6-5 GLIAC) and Northwood (8-11, 5-6 GLIAC) play on Thursday at 8 p.m., followed by Saginaw Valley University (7-12, 3-8 GLIAC) on Saturday at 3 p.m.     

Last Time on the Court

Lake Superior State fell to Ferris State University at Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Michigan 97-76 on Saturday in the Lakers' loss against Ferris State, junior guard Malek Adams had a career-high game with 30 points and recorded his first career double-double with 10 rebounds. Senior guard Carson Manger put up 11 points, four rebounds and three steals. Sophomore forward Rog Stein contributed with eight points, six rebounds and two assists.  

Team Leaders

Junior guard Malek Adams leads the Lakers in scoring average with 18.1 points per game on 49.5 percent shooting. Adams has scored in double figures in 12 of his 15 games played this season, including eight games with at least 20 points. His most recent 20-point effort came against Ferris State when he scored 30 points.

Sophomore forward Rog Stein leads the team in rebounds per game (7.9), assists per game (3.4) and steals per game (1.8), while averaging the second-most points per game (15.1). Stein also leads the team with five double-doubles on the season. His most recent double-double was a 22 point and 10 rebound effort in the Lakers' 101-69 win over Purdue Northwest. Senior guard Tim Cairnduff is third on the team in scoring average with 9.7 points per game, while having 3.3 assists per game for the second-most assists per game on the team.  

By the Numbers

Lake Superior State is averaging 82.2 points per game of offense compared to 77.6 by its opponents. LSSU is shooting 49.3 percent from the field, including 40.8 percent from three-point range. LSSU is limiting its opponents to 45.7 percent shooting and 34.9 percent from behind the three-point arc. The Lakers are averaging 17.4 assists per game compared to 12.5 turnovers.

Scouting Northwood

Northwood (8-11, 5-6 GLIAC) enters Thursday's game coming off an overtime road win against Saginaw Valley. The Timberwolves defeated Saginaw Valley 80-77 on Saturday. Trey McBride is the reigning GLIAC South Division Player of the Week. In Northwood's win over Saginaw Valley, McBride recorded his first career double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, also tallied three steals and two assists. 

Scouting Saginaw Valley

Saginaw Valley (7-12, 3-8 GLIAC), are coming off last week's games with a split, On Wednesday Jan. 23 the Cardinals defeated Grace Christian 89-73 and Saturday Jan. 26 they faced GLIAC foe, Northwood and lost in overtime 80-77. Myles Belyeu led the team with an average of 21.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1 assist between the two games.
