Men’s Basketball Returns to GLIAC Play

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State men's basketball returns to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference play against Davenport University and Grand Valley State University.

Lake Superior State (6-4, 2-2 GLIAC) plays Davenport (9-2, 2-2 GLIAC) at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Davenport Student Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan before facing Grand Valley State (9-3, 3-1 GLIAC) at 3 p.m. on Saturday inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Last Time on the Court

Lake Superior State defeated Cedarville University 94-92 in a nonconference game on Saturday at Bud Cooper gymnasium.

Four Lakers scored in double figures in the win. Junior guard Malek Adams eclipsed the 20-point plateau for the fourth time in his last five games played with a game-high 24 points. Senior forward Blake Marquardt made seven three-pointers for a season-high 21 points. Sophomore forward Rog Stein added 15 points and senior guard Tim Cairnduff scored 12.

The Lakers went 12-of-24 from behind the three-point line and they also took 26 free throws (20 made).    

Team Leaders

Junior guard Malek Adams is leading the Lakers in scoring average with 17.3 points per game. Adams has eclipsed the 20-point plateau in four of his eight games played this season, including 24 points in the Lakers 94-92 win over Cedarville University on Saturday. The 24 points matched his season high, which he also achieved in Lake State's 89-65 win at Wayne State on Dec. 1.  

Sophomore forward Rog Stein leads the team in rebounds per game (8.0), assists per game (4.1) and steals per game (1.9), while averaging the second-most points per game (14.5).

By the Numbers

Lake Superior State is averaging 83.4 points per game of offense compared to 78.3 by its opponents. LSSU is shooting 50.2 percent from the field, including 41.3 percent from three-point range. LSSU is limiting its opponents to 46.1 percent shooting and 37.6 percent from behind the three-point arc. The Lakers are averaging 18.1 assists per game compared to 11.7 turnovers.

Scouting Davenport

Davenport (9-2, 2-2 GLIAC) is 3-2 in its last five games, including a 109-52 home win over Goshen College on Dec. 19.

The Panthers, who are averaging 85.2 points per game on 49.5 percent shooting, including 38.3 percent on three-point shots, have six players averaging double figures in points. Dyllon Hudson-Emory is leading the Panthers in scoring with 15.5 points per game.

Scouting Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State (9-3, 3-1 GLIAC) is 3-2 in its last five games played, including an 82-78 loss at Truman State in Kirksville, Missouri On Dec. 18. GVSU plays at home against Ferris State on Thursday before facing Lake Superior State on Saturday.
