Lakers Fall to Northern Michigan on Senior Day

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- The Lake Superior State volleyball team concluded their season today in a three set loss to Upper Peninsula rival Northern Michigan. The scores were 15-25, 17-25,  and 21-25.

First Set

The first set would begin with a service ace from Northern Michigan's Madeline Crowley. The Wildcats would come out to an early 4-1 lead on the Lakers. The Lakers would respond with their very own 5-1 scoring run to make the score 6-5 in favor of Lake State. The Wildcats would rally on an 8-2 run to make the score 13-8 in favor of Northern Michigan. The two opponents would continue to trade points until Northern Michigan would pull an 11-6 run on the Lakers to bring the score to a 24-15 Northern Lead. Northern would take the set 25-15. Senior Amanda Reid would lead the Laker offence in the set with five kills. 

Second Set

Northern Michigan would build off of their success in the first set to begin the second set. The Wild cats would begin the set with a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats would keep this momentum to an 11-4 lead. The Lakers would continue to fight as Katja Wilhelms would have a service ace to bring the Laker within five. The Lakers would eventually make the score 12-16 following two powerful kills by Reid. The Wildcats would go on a 6-1 run to make the score a 22-13 Wildcat lead. The Lakers would battle back to make the score 17-23 but the Wildcats would still take the set 25-17. Sophomore Halle grulke would have 13 assists in the match to lead her team. 

Third Set

The Lakers jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead on the Wildcat's from Sophomore Libero Abby Beachnau's precise serves. The rivals would score back and forth points until Northern Michigan would rally back to make the score 10-9 in favor of the Lakers. The Wildcats took the lead after some very long rallies to make the score 16-13 in favor of Northern Michigan. The Wildcats bring their lead to 18-13 when Head Coach Dave Schmidlin called a timeout. Following the timeout, Lake State went on a 5-0 run to tie the score at 18 a piece. The rivals would lock into intense rallies and trade leads until Northern Michigan would pull away with the win with a final score of 25-21
