Lakers Earn First Conference Win of the Season

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's volleyball secured its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win of the 2019 season with a road victory against the Northern Michigan Wildcats in Marquette, Mich. on Friday, Sept. 27. The Lakers record improves to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play with the win in the four set match.

Last season, the Lakers fell twice to the Wildcats, both times in the fifth set of the match. It is the first win for the Lakers against the Northen Michigan Wildcats since Oct. 22, 2005.

Results:

First Set: Lakers won, 25-23

Second Set: Lakers won, 25-20

Third Set: Wildcats won, 25-22

Fourth Set: Lakers won, 25-20

Senior outside hitter Amanda Reid continues to lead the Lakers, as she posted a team-high 13 kills in the match and the second-most digs in the game for LSSU with 13 through four sets. Camdyn Odykirk ranked second on the team with 11 kills against the Wildcats. 

Sophomore Halle Grulke's 34 assists led Lake State. The setter also recorded six kills in the game and five digs. 

With 14 digs in the match to lead the Lakers, sophomore libero Abby Beachnau's solid defensive play continues.

The Lakers will look to complete the weekend road sweep tomorrow with a game against GLIAC leader, Michigan Tech. Lake State will play the Huskies in Houghton, Mich. at 4:00 p.m tomorrow.
