Lakers with Back-to-Back Home Games to Open GLIAC Play

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's volleyball team on Friday, Sept. 20 will open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play against No. 10 Ferris State on Friday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The team's home opener will be followed by a match against Northwood on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 2:00 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gym. Through the first eight games of the 2019 season, the Lakers hold a 3-5 overall record.

After participating in the GLIAC/NSIC Crossover tournament on Sept. 13 and 14, the Lakers begin 2019 GLIAC conference play against the Ferris State Bulldogs and the Northwood Timberwolves. With a 6-2 record, Ferris State is ranked No. 10 nationally in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll and knocked off Tampa, who was ranked No. 1 at the time, in straight sets last weekend. Ferris State is the only GLIAC team ranked in the top 25 nationally. Northwood has posted an 0-7 record through the first seven games of the season and opens GLIAC play against Saginaw Valley State on Friday. 

Lakers Player to Watch:

Sr. Amanda ReidReid, an outside hitter, is the leader on and off the court for the Lakers. The Norco, Calif. native is one of two seniors on the Lakers roster and four total upperclassmen. Reid ranks first among her teammates in kills with 102 and 3.52 kills/set in 8 total games played so far. She is one of three Lakers to appear in every set that the team has played so far along with junior Kyra Vezina and sophomore Abby Beachnau. Defensively, Reid ranks third with 97 digs.

Bulldogs Player to Watch:

Sr. Allyson Cappel - Cappel, an outside hitter, was named GLIAC North Player of the Week on Monday, Sept. 16 after posting 60 kills, 49 digs, and five blocks in last weekend's Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver, Colo. The Tinley Park, Ill. native leads the Bulldogs in kills (110) through eight games. 

Timberwolves Player to Watch:

Sr. Carson Rutherford - Rutherford, an outside hitter, has appeared in all seven matches for the Timberwolves this season. The Flushing, Mich. native leads Northwood in kills (74), kills per set (3.08) and ranks second in digs (64).

Up Next

The Lakers will travel to Marquette and Houghton MI, to face the Northern Michigan Wildcats and the #21 Michigan Tech Huskies. The game against Northern Michigan (3-5) will take place on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 pm. The game against the Huskies (5-3) will be at 4:00 pm on Saturday, Sept. 28.
