Lakers Compete in Day 2 of GLIAC/NSIC Crossover

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team was defeated by the No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs and the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers on the second day of the GLIAC/NSIC Crossover tournament in St. Cloud, Minn. on Saturday, Sept. 14. The Lakers overall record drops to 3-5 on the season.

Senior Amanda Reid was named to the All-Tournament Team. 

Game 1 - Lake State vs Minnesota-Duluth:

In their third game of the weekend, the Lakers fell to the NSIC's Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in three sets. The Bulldogs won by scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-11. 

Amanda Reid led the Lakers offensively with a team-leading seven kills, while also adding to the Lakers defensive effort with a team-high nine digs against Minnesota Duluth. Sophomore libero Abby Beachnau also had nine digs for the Lakers. 

Sophomore Halle Grulke tallied 20 assists for the Lakers in the game. 

Game 2 - Lake State vs South Dakota Mines: 

Lake State closed out the tournament with a three set loss to the South Dakota Mines by scores of 25-16, 26-24 and 25-20.

The Lakers kill leaders were sophomore Camdyn Odykirk, who recorded eight in the game, and sophomore Bethany Wilson, who finished the match with seven kills. The Lakers had similar assist contributions from Grulke (15) and freshman Emily Kalinowski (14). 

Beachnau had a team-high 20 digs against the Hardrockers, with Reid and freshman Sydney Briney ranking second with 11 digs each. Briney notched two of the Lakers five service aces in the match. 

Up Next: 

The Lakers kick off their 2019 GLIAC conference season and host the #11 Ferris State Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 21 the Lakers will host the Northwood Timberwolves at 2:00pm. Both matches are set to be played in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
