Women's Tennis Records a 6-1 Road Victory over Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team defeated the Davenport University Panthers by a score of 6-1 on Saturday, March 20 in the team's second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match of the weekend at the Gainey Athletic Complex in Grand Rapids, Mich. Through the first four matches of the season, the Lakers hold a 2-2 overall record and a 1-1 record in conference play.

Lake Superior State won the doubles point over the Panthers as the Lakers top two pairs won their sets and the third pair won by default, as the Panthers were playing with a shortened lineup. Nadege Koua and Milen Baigorria, the team's No. 1 pair, won their set (6-3) and the Lakers No. 2 pair of Keegan Malpass and Claudia Sole won by a score of 6-4.

In singles play, the Lakers won five of the six matches. Koua, the Lakers top singles player, won in two sets (6-2, 6-3) to set the tone for a strong performance from the Lakers against Davenport. The Lakers only loss in singles play came by default as Muskaan Ranjan had to end her set early due to an injury.

The Lakers No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 players each won their sets handily against the Panthers. Baigorria, in the No. 3 spot, won in two sets (6-0, 6-0) while No. 4 Malpass (6-1, 6-0) and No. 5 Sole (6-0, 6-1) also won in two sets.

The Panthers did not have a sixth player available so the Lakers won the final singles point by default.

Looking Ahead

The Lakers will continue conference play next weekend with a match against the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday, March 27 at 9:00 a.m.
