Lakers Golf Starts 2019-20 Season Strong

Bay City, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's and men's golf teams completed their first weekend of the 2019-20 season with both participating in road invitationals (Sept. 14-15). 

"I feel confident that both teams are ready to play this fall with all the hard work and dedication these athletes have displayed this season so far.  Both courses are offer some challenges but not as difficult as our home course," said Head Coach Tony Crisp. 

The women's team had a strong opening appearance as they placed second overall among nine participating teams in the SVSU Fall Invitational, with a team score of 616 (310-306). The invitational was hosted by Saginaw Valley State University in Bay City, Mich. The Lakers had a memorable weekend as the team surpassed the school record twice. Lake State's first day total of 310 surpassed the previous record by four strokes, and the women then topped that score by another four strokes on Sunday (306). 

Junior Naomi Keyte led the way for the Lakers as she tied for fifth overall and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Keyte had an impressive first day as she ended the day tied for first place with a score of 75. Her second day total of 78 gave her an overall score of 153. 

Junior Taylor Simoneau (79-76) and freshman Julia Vess (77-78)  each recorded an overall score of 155 and were tied for 13th among participants. Junior Madison Wilkie had a two-day total of 156 (79-77), which tied her for 16th overall. Sophomore Alyshia Suleman rounded out the Laker finishers with a total score of 163 after recording a score of 88 on Saturday and responding with a 75 on Sunday. Senior Madison Whittet, who competed as an individual, posted a score of 164 overall (82-82). 

The men's team finished fourth overall with a team score of 609 (306-303) in the GLIAC North Invitational that was hosted by Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. Lake Superior State competed against Ferris State, Davenport University, Grand Valley, and Saginaw Valley. 

The men's team was led by junior Isaac Lennox who finished tied for 14th overall with a score of 151 (75-76). Junior Nick Oosterhof and freshman Callum McKay tied for second among the Lakers as they each recorded a two-day identical total of 152 (78-74). Junior Ryan Page followed with a score of 154 (75-79) while freshman Jace Carlisle completed his first collegiate competition with an overall score of 159 (80-79). Sophomore Sam Hamelin, who competed individually, registered a two-day score of 166 (85-81). 

The women's team will compete again at the Blue Devil Classic at Lawrence Tech in Gaylord, Mich on Monday, Sept. 23 and Tuesday, Sept. 24. The men's team will return to play on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29 as they travel to South Haven, Mich. to take part in the Hawkshead Invitational, hosted by Wayne State University.
