Laker Awards: Lexie Khon, Debra McPherson Outstanding Female Athlete

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lexie Khon has been awarded the 2019-20 Debra McPherson Outstanding Female Athlete Award as the department's top senior female athlete, as voted on by the LSSU head coaches. 

The Debra McPherson Outstanding Female Athlete Award is given to the "senior female athlete, who in the opinion of her coaches and the Athletic Awards Committee has contributed most toward the advancement of athletics, and has displayed superior skills, outstanding sportsmanship, self-discipline, and academic prowess."

Khon, a kinesiology major from Jackson, Mich., has appeared in 107 games as a Laker, including 94 games as a starter. Khon, who was one of four Lakers this season to start every game, has started every game for the Lakers during her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. In her final home game on Feb. 15, Khon became the 22nd Laker in women's basketball history to record 1,000 career points. Khon finished her collegiate career with 1,047 career points, ranking 21st all-time in Lake State women's basketball. 

In each of her four seasons as a Laker, Khon's overall play improved which culminated with a strong senior campaign. The Michigan native finished her career with a 47.2 shooting percentage, including a career best 54.6 percent during her senior season. Khon's career-best 83.6 free throw percentage during her senior year contributed to her career 76.7 percentage. Khon also set career bests in single season points (346) and points per game (12.8) during her final year as a Laker.  The forward's 136 rebounds as a senior was a slight decrease from her junior year total of 149, as she finished her career with 515 rebounds. 

As a senior, the forward led the team in points per game, shooting percentage and points. Khon ranked second on the team with 5.0 rebounds per game, totaling 136. During the 2019-20 season, Khon ranked eighth among all Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) athletes in shooting percentage and 15th among her conference peers in points per game. This season, Khon posted double-digit point totals in 18 games, including five games with 20 or more points. Against Malone on Nov. 8, Khon set a single-game career best 26 points for the Lakers. 

Khon ranked first on the team in free throw percentage among players who had at least 30 attempts, with a 83.6 success rate. Khon made 61 of 73 free throw attempts during the 2019-20 season which ranks first all-time among Lakers in a single season with a minimum of 30 attempts. Khon's career free throw percentage of 76.7 ranks ninth all-time among LSSU women's basketball players. 

Khon was awarded the team's Most Valuable Player during her junior year, and has led the Lakers in scoring for two straight seasons. Academically, Khon was named to the 2019-20 GLIAC Winter All-Academic Team. 

This year's nominees for the Debra McPherson Outstanding Female Athlete Award included Amanda Reid, an outside hitter on the volleyball team, and Rebecca Lathrop, a mid-distance/distance runner on the cross country and track & field teams.
