Women's Basketball Defeats Purdue Northwest in Overtime, 65-62

HAMMOND, Ind. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team recorded a 65-62 overtime win over the Purdue Northwest Pride on Saturday, Feb. 22 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game.

The victory brought the Lakers up to eight wins this season, tying last year's win total. The Lakers fourth conference win is the most since the 2015-16 season when the team also had four wins.

The Lakers started the game strong holding a 19-11 lead following the first quarter. The Lakers would fall behind 5-0 within the first two minutes of the game but Mattison Rayman would put Lake State on the board with a pair of successful free throws. Lexie Khon and Abigail Ostman would take over the game in the next stretch of play as the duo scored a combined eight points to give the Lakers a 12-9 lead with just under four minutes left in the first quarter. The Lakers would hold onto the score advantage in the remaining minutes and extend the lead to eight points (19-11) at the end of the first quarter.

To open the second quarter, the Lakers would build upon the lead as Claire Radtke and Ostman each made three point shots to give the Lakers a 25-11 lead. With Morgan Villemure adding another three-pointer for the Lakers, the team was able to go ahead 29-20 with 2:12 left in the first half and would head into the locker room holding a 31-22 lead over the Pride. 

The third quarter was evenly matched between the pair of conference rivals with the Lakers outscoring Purdue Northwest by a 16-14 margin. Ostman led the Lakers with seven points in the third quarter. 

In the final ten minutes of play, the Pride would rally, scoring 21 points compared to 10 from the Lakers. The game would require overtime as the teams were tied at 57 points each. Sadie DeWildt would score five of the Lakers eight points in the extra time session to lead the team to a 65-62 win over the Pride. 

Ostman finished the game as the Lakers points leader with 19 in the game while also contributing five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Rayman recorded a double double in the game as she posted 12 rebounds and 13 points. Khon finished the game with 11 points as well as six rebounds and three assists.

The Lakers will play their final regular season game at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 at Ferris State in Big Rapids, Mich.
