Women's Basketball Falls to Northwood in a GLIAC Home Game

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell by a final score of 58-45 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game against the Northwood University Timberwolves on Thursday, Feb. 6 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. 

In the first quarter, the Lakers and Timberwolves were evenly matched as the opening 10 minutes of action ended with Northwood up by four points, 17-13. Lexie Khon scored the Lakers first four points of the game and with six minutes left in the quarter, sophomore Mackenzie Kalchik added a layup to even the score at six points apiece. 

The Timberwolves would then score the next six points before the Lakers scored seven unanswered points of their own to take a 13-12 lead. A three-point jump shot from Abigail Ostman put the Lakers up by a point with 2:01 left in the first. Northwood would score the final four points in the quarter to hold the 17-13 advantage. 

In the second half, the Timberwolves offense would take over as they outscored the Lakers by a 19-9 margin. Khon would net a layup for the Lakers but three straight three-pointers from Northwood would increase the lead to 11 points (26-15). Kalchik would respond with a three-point basket of her own to bring the Lakers back within single digits of the Timberwolves. The final five minutes of the first half were low scoring between the two conference rivals with a combined eight points scored to give Northwood a 36-22 lead heading into the second half. 

In a low scoring third quarter, the Lakers held the Timberwolves to nine points while scoring eight points of their own. Mattison Rayman scored back-to-back layups for the Lakers followed  by a jump shot by Khon to make it a 38-28 game with 6:29 left to play in the quarter. The quarter ended with the Lakers trailing, 45-30. 

The Lakers effort in the fourth quarter was strong as they outscored the Timberwolves but they were not able to overcome the deficit. The game ended with the Lakers falling by a final score of 58-45. 

The Lakers posted a 42.2 shooting percentage in the game compared to the Timberwolves 39.6 success rate in the game. 

Khon finished the game with a team-high 21 points for the Lakers as she went 10-for-13 in the meeting. The senior forward also added five rebounds for the Lakers. Rayman led the team in rebounds with eight.

The Lakers will be back at home on Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. game against the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Following the contest, the Lakers will hold a special ceremony for Senior Day honoring the team's graduating class: Lexie Khon, Abigail Ostman, Claire Radtke, and Morgan Villemure
