Women's Basketball Falls to No. 2 Ashland University

ASHLAND, Ohio -  The Lake Superior State women's basketball team suffered a 99-34 loss against the No. 2 Ashland University Eagles in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Lexie Khon opened the game's scoring when she made a layup to put the Lakers up 2-0 over the Eagles. Ashland would then go on a run, scoring 21 straight points. The first quarter would end with the Eagles leading 21-5 as Claire Radtke made a three-point jump shot in the closing seconds of play.

Rebecca Villaneuva scored her first points of the game at 8:38 of the second quarter when she made a three-point shot to bring the Lakers total up to eight points compared to the Eagles 23. The Eagles offense was unstoppable through the late stages of the first half as they took a 48-14 lead over the Lakers into the second half.

The second half of the game saw Ashland continue to control play as the Eagles went on to outscore the Lakers in the third quarter to hold a dominant lead heading into the final ten minutes of action. The Lakers would post 13 points in the final quarter, led by Villaneuva who had seven points in the quarter, but were unable to overcome the deficit. The game ended with the nation's second best team clinching the win. 

Villanueva scored a team-high 13 points in the game, while also adding a team-high four rebounds for the Lakers. 

The Lakers will return home next weekend to play a pair of GLIAC games at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Thursday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 8. Thursday's game is against Northwood at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday's game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start against Saginaw Valley.
