Lexie Khon Records 24 Points but Lakers Fall To Purdue Northwest in a GLIAC Game

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent Purdue Northwest on Thursday, Jan. 23 by a final score of 54-46 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

The game was evenly matched through the first half of play with the first quarter ending with the Lakers trailing by one point, 11-10, to the Pride and the first half closing with the Lakers ahead, 20-18.

In the first quarter, senior forward Lexie Khon led the Lakers as she scored six of the team's ten points in the ten minutes of action. The second quarter saw freshman Mattison Rayman take over the team's offense as she made two free throws and a pair of layups in the quarter as she scored six straight points for the Lakers to bring them within two points at the 3:53 mark of the quarter (18-16). Junior Taylor Bryant would tie the game at 18 with just over two minutes left in the half and Khon would make a layup in the final stages of the quarter to take a 20-18 lead into the locker room.

After the Pride tied the game at 20 early in the third quarter, the Lakers would go on a five point run, once again led by Rayman, as she scored five straight points for the Lakers. Purdue Northwest would respond to the Lakers five point lead by scoring five straight points to even the game and would shortly after take the lead, 29-27. The third quarter would close with the Lakers trailing the Pride by three points, 32-29.

Khon would make a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter to bring the Lakers back within a point of the Pride, 32-31. The Lakers would stay within a point of the Pride until the six minute mark of the quarter when Purdue Northwest began to pull away and build on their lead. With 2:36 left in play, the Pride would sink a three point shot to take an eight point lead over the Lakers. The Lakers would drop the conference game by a final score of 54-46 as the late push by Purdue Northwest proved to be too much for the Lakers to overcome.

Khon would finish the game with a team-leading 24 points, as she drove the Lakers offense in the game. The senior would go 8-for-14 in the game with a 57.1 shooting percentage for the Lakers. Rayman would finish the game with 14 points and a team-leading nine rebounds in the game.
