Women's Basketball Drops GLIAC Matchup Against Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball was defeated by the Northern Michigan Wildcats by a final score of 72-39 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game on Saturday afternoon in Marquette, Mich. 

The Lakers fell behind to the Wildcats early in the game, trailing 11-2 with four minutes remaining in play. In the final three minutes of play, Mattison Rayman would make a layup and Sadie DeWildt would make two free throw attempts to end the quarter behind 15-6. 

DeWildt would continue to lead the Lakers in the second quarter as she made a three-point jump shots at 6:52 to cut the Wildcats lead to five points (17-12). However, Northern would respond with nine unanswered points to hold a 14 lead over the Lakers with two minutes left in the first half (26-12). DeWildt would add a layup for two more points to set the score at 26-14 after the first twenty minutes of play. 

The Wildcats offense would continue to control the game in the third quarter as Northern outscored the Lakers, 22-10. The Lakers would have to surmont a big comeback in the fourth quarter to overcome the Wildcats 24 point lead (48-24). 

The Lakers played their best in the fourth quarter as the team scored a game-high 15 points in the stretch but the Wildcats would hold the advantage in the final ten minutes of the game, scoring 24 points to win the game by a final score of 72-39. 

DeWildt led the Lakers with 10 points in the game while also adding two rebounds and an assist. Freshman Mattison Rayman continued to be the team's rebound leader as she led the Lakers with five while adding nine points. Freshman Kelly Olthof played well for the Lakers as she ranked third on the team with seven points against the Wildcats.

The Lakers will return home for a pair of conference games on Thursday, Jan. 23 against Purdue Northwest at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 25 against Wisconsin Parkside at 1:00 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Thursday's game will include a halftime ceremony recognizing the Laker student-athlete who earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester. Mascot day will be held at the Laker basketball games on Saturday.
