Women's Basketball Falls to No. 3 Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game to the No. 3 Grand Valley State University Lakers on Saturday, Jan. 4 by a final score of 57-39 in Allendale, Mich. 

In the opening minutes of the game, the Lakers fell behind 4-0 before senior guard Claire Radtke scored her first three pointer of the game to bring the Lakers back within a point. Grand Valley State, the third ranked team in the nation, would score the next 17 points to lead the game by a score of 17-3. Morgan Villemure added a layup in the closing seconds to end the quarter with Lake State trailing, 17-5. 

At 7:03 of the second quarter, Abigail Ostman would make her second three point shot of the game to bring the Lakers back within 10 points of GVSU (23-13). Ostman would add another three pointer during the next scoring play and minutes later, Rebecca Villenueva would net a three point shot to close GVSU's lead to five points (24-19). The second quarter would end with Lake State outscoring Grand Valley, 20-16. LSSU would look to build on their strong play in the second quarter in the second half of the game as they trailed 33-25. 

However, the Grand Valley Lakers would respond in the third quarter with a 15-3 scoring advantage over the LSSU Lakers to extend the lead to twenty points (48-28) heading into the final ten minutes of play. 

In the final quarter, the Lakers would add 11 more points as opposed to nine from GVSU but the deficit was too much to overcome. The Laker would drop the game by a final score of 57-39.

Ostman's nine points in the game led the Lakers in the game. Freshman Mattison Rayman continued her strong rebound game as she ranked first on the team with nine in the game.

The Lakers will play a pair of road games next weekend against Saginaw Valley and Northwood. The game against SVSU is set for an 1:00 p.m. start on Thursday, Jan. 8 and the game against Northwood is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. tip off on Saturday, Jan. 11.
