SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team earned a 67-47 win over the Cal Lutheran Regals on Friday, Dec. 20 in San Diego, Calif. With the win, the Lakers record stands at 5-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play at the close of the first half of the season.
The first quarter between the Lakers and Cal Lutheran was evenly matched as the Lakers held a one point lead (10-9) at the halfway point of the quarter. The high scoring first ten minutes of play ended with the Lakers ahead by five points, 23-17. Freshman Mattison Rayman led the Lakers in the first quarter as she netted nine points and added four rebounds.
In the second and third quarters, the Lakers would widen their lead over the Regals. Lake State held a double digit lead heading into the second half by a 37-25 margin. The Lakers, who outscored Cal Lutheran 27-16 in the middle quarters of play would a 50-33 lead at the end of the third quarter.
To close out the game, the Regals were not able to rally and comeback against the Lakers as the game ended with Lake Superior winning by 20 points.
Rayman had one of her strongest games as a Laker as she finished the game with 17 points and a team-leading 20 rebounds for a double-double in the game. Jenna Gregory's 14 points was good for second on the team and she was also tied for the team lead in assists in the game with four. Senior forward Lexie Khon added 12 points in the win for the Lakers.
In the game, the Lakers were shooting at a 45.5 percentage compared to the 24.6 percentage by the Regals. In addition the Lakers spent more time in control of the ball in the game as they held the advantage in rebounds, 49-34.
The Lakers will return home for a GLIAC game against Davenport on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
