Women's Basketball Falls to Azusa Pacific in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team opened its California stretch of play with a 75-33 loss against the Azusa Pacific Cougars on Tuesday, Dec. 17 in San Diego. 

In the first half, the Lakers would get on the board first with senior guard Claire Radtke netting a three pointer to put Lake State ahead 3-0. The Lakers would hold a 5-3 lead early in the first quarter before the Cougars would then outscore LSSU by a 15-8 margin. The first quarter would end with the Lakers trailing, 18-13. 

The Cougars would continue to build upon their lead in the game in the second quarter with the team holding a 40-19 lead at the end of the first. 

In the second half, the Lakers were unable to solve the Cougars defense. The third quarter ended with the Cougars outscoring the Lakers by a 14-9 advantage. The Lakers were unable to comeback in the game in the final ten minutes as the game would end with Azusa winning by a score of 75-33.

Freshman forward Mattison Rayman led the Lakers with eight points in the game and eight rebounds. Claire Radtke and Abigail Ostman were tied for second among the Lakers with six points each in the game as they each recorded two three point shots in the game. Radtke would have a solid game around the net as she registered five rebounds for the Lakers. Senior Lexie Khon ranked second on the team in rebounds with seven. Sophomore guard Sadie DeWildt led Lake State in assists in the game with four.

The Lakers will close out the pair of California games with a match up against Cal Lutheran on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 1:00 p.m. EST in San Diego, Calif.
