Laker Tennis Falls to Maryville University

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Lake Superior State men's and women's tennis teams were hosted by the Maryville University Saints on Wednesday, March 4 in St. Louis, Mo. The women's tennis team was defeated 1-6 by the Lions while the men's team fell 2-5.

In the women's contest, the team fell on all three courts for the doubles point starting the match down by a point (0-1). In the singles matches, junior AlexiAnn Drouin was defeated by the Lions in two sets of 3-6 2-6 while on court No. 2, sophomore Nadege Koua also fell 2-6 2-6. At the No. 3 spot, Junior Muskaan Ranjan swept her opponent in a third set tiebreak of 1-6 6-2 10-7 followed by singles No. 4, Keegan Malpass who was defeated by 1-6 0-6. At court No. 5, freshman Riley Gilman dropped her singles by 2-6 0-6. In the No. 6, freshman Madelin Harrod was defeated by 0-6 2-6.

In the other hand, the men's tennis team had a solid start by getting a win on all three courts for the doubles point. During the singles competition, senior Joe Gilman battled hard, falling in the tiebreaker of the third set 7-6 (6) 5-7 6-10 followed by freshman Juho Kantola who lost in a grueling three set tiebreaker 6-2 1-6 6-10. At the No. 3 spot, Krishan Taneja fell in a tight match playing a third set tiebreaker 6-3 4-6 6-10. In court No. 4, Ali Sahibzada had a big victory sweeping his opponent in a competitive third set tiebreaker 6-3 1-6 13-11. The team's No. 5 player, Harris Irfan Ul Haq fell in two sets of 5-7 6-4. At the No. 6 spot, Diego Penz was defeated in two partials of 3-6 1-6.

The Lakers will be taking on Webster University tomorrow, Thursday, March 5 in Webster Groves, Mo. to play an exhibition match.
