Laker Tennis Set for a Week Long Spring Break Road Trip

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's tennis teams will be travelling to St. Louis, Mo. for four nonconference matches that will be played during the team's annual spring break trip. With the results not impacting the team's conference record, the Lakers will look to open the spring season on a strong note, building their confidence in preparation for Great Lakes Intercolleiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. Last spring break, the men's team finished with a record of 2-3 while the women's team had a record of 3-2 after playing in five matches on the trip. 

The week will include four matches starting with a contest against the University of Illinois-Springfield on Saturday, Feb. 29. On Sunday, March 1 the Lakers will compete against McKendree University, followed by a match at Lindenwood University on Tuesday, March 3 and wrapping up the trip with a match against Maryville University on Wednesday, March 4.   

 
 

The women's team ended their fall GLIAC season in October with an overall record of 2-7, putting together a competitive season depsite numerous injuries to their lineup. The women's team looks to string together a solid non-conference performance. 

The men's tennis team will take advantage of these four non-conference matches to guide the team into conference play, which begins on Saturday, March 21 at Wayne StateThe team will have nine returners from last season: Joe Gilman, Zane Gum, Diego Penz, Seth PinnooHarris Rehan, Ali Sahibzada, Peter Summers, Krishan Taneja, and Stefan Trisic. Two freshmen will join the roster: Juho Kantola from Finland and Viktor Vlasov from Ukraine. Last season, the men's team posted an overall record of 6-9. With a veteran presence on the roster as well as a number of impressive returners, the team looks to improve on last year's win total and a earn a spot in the GLIAC conference tournament for the second consecutive season.  

This spring, Lake Superior State will host three matches on March 27, April 10 and April 11. Come support the Lakers at the Student Activity Center as all matches begin at 10:00 a.m. and are free of charge to attend.
