Lakers and Chargers Play to a Scoreless Tie, with Lakers taking the Extra League Point in a Shootout

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State hockey team tied the University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers in a scoreless Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) game on Friday, Feb. 14 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. at the Taffy Abel Arena. In the sudden death overtime shootout, which counts only for WCHA league purposes, Yuki Miura scored the lone goal in the fifth round for the Lakers.L

The game was the epitome of a goaltending showcase as in seventy minutes of play and five rounds of a shootout only one goal was allowed. Mareks Mitens recorded his first shutout of the 2019-20 season as he stopped all 23 shots he faced in regulation and the first overtime. Mark Sinclair, the Alabama Huntsville Chargers goaltender, stopped 44 shots on goal in the 65 minutes of official play to shutout the Lakers. With 44 shots in the game, the Lakers set a new season high shots on goal and have posted back-to-back games with 40 or more shots on goal for the first time this season.

After the first overtime concluded with the game still standing at a scoreless tie, the teams played a five minute period with three skaters on each side. The second overtime still could not decide a winner so the game headed to a sudden death shootout round.

Neither team scored in the first four rounds of the shootout with the Lakers represented by Jacob Nordqvist, Ashton Calder, Max Humitz and Louis Boudon. In the fifth round of the shootout, Miura solved the Chargers goalie to give the Lakers the point advantage in the game.

Tomorrow night the teams will head to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to complete the series. The historic game will be the first time that the Lakers have played an official NCAA game in Canada while also marking the first time that a NCAA Division I men's college hockey game has been played across the border since 2012.
