Lakers Fall to Alaska in Series Opener

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Lake Superior State hockey team fell by a final score of 2-0 against the Alaska Nanooks on Friday, Jan. 10 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) game at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. 

In the first period, the Lakers would come close to grabbing a 1-0 lead when Ashton Calder connected a pass to Max Humitz and Humitz would fire a shot on goal that beat Nanooks goaltender Gustavs Grigals. However, the goal was disallowed due to goaltender interference and the first period would close tied at zero.

At 3:19 of the third period, Alaska would break the scoreless tie when Logan Coomes scored his first goal as a Nanook to give the team a 1-0 lead. The goal, which was reviewed for offsides, was assisted by Filip Fornaa Svensson and Eriks Zohovs. 

With seconds left in the game the Nanooks, sealed the win when James Ladouce scored an empty net goal for a 2-0 final score. 

Mareks Mitens finished the game with 25 saves against the Nanooks while Grigals recorded the shutout for Alaska with 25 saves against the Lakers.

The Lakers will close out their Alaska road trip with an 11:00 p.m. EST game against the  Nanooks tomorrow night Saturday Jan. 11 in Fairbanks at the Carlson Center.
