Men's Basketball Announces NLI Signings

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State men's basketball coach Steve Hettinga has announced the first members of the 2021 recruiting class with the signing of a trio of Ann Arbor Huron High School standouts Devin Womack, Kingsley Perkins, and Tyson Edmondson to National Letters of Intent.

Womack is a 6'2" guard who has been a mainstay for the River Rats the last 3 years. Last year he averaged 12 points, five rebounds, and a team-leading four assists per game. During the 2019-20 season, Womack was named to the First Team All-SEC as well as the MLive All-Area Dream Team.

Perkins, a 6' 7" forward, is a two sport athlete at Huron. He also plays tight end and defensive end for the River Rats football team, where he was named All-SEC Red and made the Dream Team. In 2019-20, he averaged seven points and seven rebounds while leading the team in blocks. Perkins chose Lake Superior State over multiple Division II offers for basketball, and Division I and II offers in football.

Edmondson is a 6'5" guard who is also a two sport athlete as he is the starting quarterback for Huron. In 2019-20, he averaged 10.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while making almost 50% of his threes. He was recognized as First Team SEC and the MLive All-Area Dream Team in basketball.

All three were starters last season for Huron and helped lead the team to a 21-1 record, SEC Red championship, and a spot in the district final. Before play was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Huron was a favorite to win the state title with victories over powerhouse programs like Shaker Heights, Kalamazoo Central, and defending state champions Yspi-Lincoln, who was led by the #1 nationally ranked prospect Emoni Bates. Ann Arbor Huron has been a perrenial powerhouse under Head Coach Waleed Samaha who was named BCAM's 2020 Coach of the Year and has guided the River Rats to a 189-56 record since 2009. He has coached multiple collegiate players and had the following remarks on both players.

"I am excited for the next step in Devin's journey," said Samaha. " Devin is a gym rat, who dedicates all of his free time to getting better everyday.  He is a great leader, and a great student.  He is a high character kid that is going to make a huge impact early in his career at LSSU.  He plays with excellent pace.  He's never rushed or out of control with the ball. He makes timely decisions.  Devin can score through contact at the rim and he can hit shots from the perimeter.  He sees the floor very well and is a willing play maker for his teammates.  His teammates will love playing with him and his coaches will love coaching him."

"Tyson is a fierce competitor with great leadership skills," said Ann Arbor Huron's Samaha. "Tyson is a sharp shooter who also has great vision and passing skills. He competes defensively! He does a great job communicating on screens and defensive rotations. Tyson will push teammates to get better everyday!"

"Kingsley is a tough and physical defender, rebounder and shot blocker," said Samaha. He loves to compete and his personality is infectious! Kingsley can finish at the basket and also has developed shooting touch from the perimeter. Kingsley will play a key role in creating a positive culture on and off the court."

Womack, Perkins and Edmondson will be joining the Lakers for the 2021-22 season.

"First and foremost, we know we are getting three high character young men from great supporting families," said LSSU Head Coach Steve Hettinga. "Throughout the recruiting process, I have been very impressed with who they are and what we're getting.  I also know we are adding three young men who are extremely well coached and play with great discipline and passion for the game.  Coach Samaha and his staff run a first class program and demand excellence from each of their players.  I'm beyond excited to have the opportunity to coach each of them next year.  Our program got a lot better on signing day."
