Men's Basketball Set to Close Out the Regular Season against Ferris State

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.- The Lake Superior State men's basketball team will complete their regular season play with a game against the No. 11 Ferris State Bulldogs. The game will take place in Big Rapids, Mich. at the Jim Wink Arena at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27th. 

The Lakers

Lake State went 1-1 on the weekend including a nail-biting victory on the road over Wisconsin-Parkside by a score of 62-60. In the game, the Lakers were led by sophomore Justin Fischer who would score 13 points in the matchup to go with six assists on the day. The Lakers would trade baskets with the Rangers on almost every point in the victory. 

On Saturday, Feb 22, the Lakers would lose 86-71 to the Purdue Northwest Pride. PNW and the Lakers were tied at 39 at the half, but PNW's explosive offence would put them over the top as they would score 47 points in the second half. The Lakers were led in scoring by freshman Nigel Colvin who scored 20 points in the game. Freshman Xander Okerlund would grab seven rebounds in the loss. 

The Lakers will look to gain some valuable Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) points against the Ferris State Bulldogs on Thursday. The Lakers are currently tied for 8th place with Northern Michigan and Ashland. In the last game against the Bulldogs back on Dec. 14th, the Lakers were defeated by 11 points in a 97-86 point loss. The Lakers would remain competitive in the entire game and come back from a 55-37 deficit at the half to come within seven points halfway through the second half. The Lakers will hope to even the season series on Thursday to keep their playoff hopes alive.

No. 11 Ferris State Bulldogs

The Bulldogs are currently the No. 1 seed in the GLIAC North as well as the entire conference. At 15-4, the Bulldogs have remained in the NCAA national top 25 every week of the season. The Bulldogs have won six of their last seven games thanks to their leading scorer, Walt Kelser who leads his team with 529 points thus far in the season. The Bulldogs are coached by Andy Bronkema who is in his sixth season.
