Men's Basketball Falls to Purdue Northwest, 86-71

HAMMOND, Ind. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team dropped an 86-71 game to the Purdue Northwest Pride on Saturday, Feb. 22 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game.

Ke'Montrece Collins gave the Lakers an early 3-0 lead over the Pride as he made a three-point jump shot within the first minute of play and would make another three-pointer within the next two minutes to regain a 6-4 lead for Lake State.

At 16:21 of the first half, Nigel Colvin would get on the scoresheet with a basket from the outside to give the Lakers an 11-7 lead and in the next stretch of play, the Lakers would eventually go up by a seven point margin with Justin Fischer making back-to-back layups (17-10). 

The Pride's offense would heat up in the minutes that followed and by the halfway mark of the half, the home team would hold a 23-22 lead over the Lakers. At 9:31 of the half, senior Cody Ley brought the Lakers back within two points (27-25) of tying the game with a three-point jump shot. 

With C.J. Robinson scoring on a layup in the final seconds of the first half, the evenly matched opening twenty minutes of action would end tied with each team scoring 39 points.   

The first five minutes of play in the second half were similar to the previous game action as the lead shifted between the teams. The Pride held the lead in the opening three minutes but freshman Xander Okerlund tied the game at 49 when he made a jump shot at 16:43 of the half. The Lakers then regained the lead when Robinson added three points and with six minutes played in the half, the match was once again tied (58-58). 

With 11 minutes left in the second half, the Pride scored 10 straight points to take a 70-61 lead over the Lakers. In the final ten minutes of play, the Lakers were unable to comeback to even the game against the Pride as the contest ended with the home team winning by a final score of 86-71. 

Colvin led the Lakers with 20 points in the game while also adding a pair of rebounds, an assist and a steal in the effort. Collins ranked second among the Lakers with 13 points in the game while contributing four rebounds, an assists, three steals and a block. Fischer rounded out the Lakers top three scorers in the game with 12 points.

The Lakers will play their final regular season game at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 at Ferris State in Big Rapids, Mich.
