Men's Basketball Continues Playoff Push on the Road this Weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team will face two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) teams on the road this weekend. The Lakers will travel to Wisconsin Parkside on Thursday, Feb. 20 for a game at 8:30 p.m. and Purdue Northwest on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3:00 p.m. 

The Lakers 

Lake Superior State has been surging for a spot in the GLIAC tournament over the last few weeks. The Lakers currently stand tied with Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley with 24 conference points on the season. The Lakers will look to pull ahead this weekend to look to soldify their place in the postseason. 

The Lakers went 1-1 last weekend against two very good teams. In Thursday's matchup, the Lakers soundly defeated the Northern Michigan Wildcats by a score of 82-68, to even the season series as the  Wildcats defeated the Lakers 65-40, earlier this season. The Lakers would be led in the matchup by senior forward Ke'Montrece Collins who would score 20 in the matchup and also grab eight rebounds. 

Following the game against Northern Michigan, the Lakers hosted the Michigan Tech Huskies. The Lakers would come out to an early lead, however hot shooting by the Huskies would make it difficult to come back for the Lakers. In the end, the Lakers would lose 69-63 to the Huskies. Collins would record a double-double in the matchup with 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Lakers. 

Wisconsin Parkside Rangers

Parkside is currently 10-15 on the season. The Rangers have lost 8 games in a row with their last victory coming on Jan 18 against Ashland. In the last meeting between the Lakers and Rangers, the Lakers were victorious by a score of 75-66. The Lakers would be led in the matchup By Ke'Montrece Collins who would score 18 points and Ashton Sherrell who would snag eight boards. The Rangers are coached by Luke Reigel who is in his 17th season. 

Purdue-Northwest Pride

Purdue Northwest currently sits at the bottom of the GLIAC north division with only nine conference points. The Pride have currently lost two games in a row as they prepare to face the Lakers. Back on Jan. 23, the Lakers defeated PNW by a score of 72-59 in the Ronald "Bud" Cooper Gymnasium. The Pride were led by Jyrus Freel who scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds. The Pride are coached by Boomer Roberts who is a second year head coach for PNW. 

Up Next

The Lakers will travel to Big Rapids, Mich. to face Farris State in their final regular season game. The game will start at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27th.
