Men's Basketball Falls to Northern Michigan in a Road Matchup

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team dropped a 65-40 game to the Northern Michigan Wildcats in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon in Marquette, Mich.

In a low scoring first half of play, the Lakers were behind by six points, trailing the Wildcats by a score of 24-18. The first five minutes of play saw little scoring between the two teams as the Lakers trailed 4-2, with Ke'Montrece Collins scoring a layup for the Lakers.

At 9:14 of the first half, Nigel Colvin scored his second straight layup following a three-pointer made by Collins to bring the Lakers within a point of the Wildcats (10-9). When Colvin sunk a pair of free throw attempts at 7:55, the Lakers took the lead for the first time in the game going ahead 11-10.

The score was tied with four minutes remaining in the half (16-16) before Northern's Sam Taylor would net eight points for his team to hold the lead at the end of the first twenty minutes of play.

In the second half, the Wildcats offense took over as they outscored the Lakers by a 41-22 margin to record a 65-40 victory. After Nothern built upon its lead in the opening minutes of the second half, C.J. Robinson would record a three-point play making a jump shot and drawing a foul to bring the Lakers back within single digits of the Wildcats (29-22). Less than a minute later, Colvin went three-for-three on free throws to cut Northern's lead to six points (31-25). Despite the Lakers efforts, at the halfway mark of the half, the Wildcats had extended their lead to 16 points with a score of 46-30.

In the final stretch of the game, the Lakers could not find a way to overcome the lead the Wildcats built as the game ended with Northern Michigan taking the conference win.

For the second game in a row, Colvin led the Lakers in points as he had a team-high 12 against the Wildcats.  Colvin would also add four rebounds and one assist. Collins led the Lakers in rebounds with 10, all coming defensively.
