Men's Basketball Wins Exhibition Game over Rochester

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with a 70-55 win in an exhbition game against Rochester University in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Lakers were led by sophomore guard Justin Fischer who shot an impressive 7-11 from the field for a total of 17 points. 

Starting Off on the Right Foot

The Lakers came out hot to start the game, scoring seven unanswered points to begin the game. Once the Lakers had this lead, they never looked back. Lake Superior State held the lead through the entire game. The Lakers played great defence forcing the Rochester Warriors to give up the ball 14 times in the first half. The Lakers found offensive success in the paint and on the three-point arc. The Lakers decisively outrebounded the Warriors in the first half 13-7, allowing for success on the other end of the court. At the end  of the first half, the Lakers led the Warriors by a score of 34-22.

Finishing the Job

The Lakers started out the second half much like the first half. Lake Superior State went on a 9-0 run to start the half. The Lakers continued to out rebound the Warriors in the second half binging the final rebounding tally to 25-20. The Lakers shot all of their free-throws in the second half as a result of five fouls within three minute for the Warriors. The Lakers went 13-19 from the foul line in the game. With 12:33 left in the game, the Lakers took their largest lead (22). The Lakers finished the game 24-45  from the field (53.4%) and 8-18 from three (44.4%).

The Lakers will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to participate in the Trevecca Classic hosted by Trevecca Nazarene University. The Lakers will face Drury University on Friday, Nov. 8 at 12:00 p.m. and Southwest Baptist University on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 11:30 p.m.
