Preview: Track & Field Looks to Continue Strong Season at the 2021 Hillsdale Invitational

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete in the 2021 Hillsdale Invitational hosted by Hillsdale College on Saturday, April 10 in Hillsdale, Mich. The competition will take place on the Ken Herrick Outdoor Track with both the field and running events beginning at 12:00 p.m.

The Laker track program will look to continue to build upon its strong start to the 2021 outdoor season, as head coach Rob Gallinger has led his student-athletes to a number of new personal-bests as well as new school records.

The majority of the team will be competing in the Hillsdale Invitational and many Lakers will look to continue the success they had at the Blizzard Buster a few weeks ago into this meet.

On the men's side, David Mitter will compete in the 5,000m run for the Lakers for the second time this season. During the 2021 indoor season, Mitter broke the school record on two separate occasions in the 5k distance, and in the Blizzard Buster on March 20, Mitter set a school record in the 5,000m distance with a time of 14:38.98.

In the men's field events, throwers Timothy Howes and Ryan Reiniche both had great starts to the outdoor season with each setting personal bests at the Blizzard Buster. The pair will look to continue to improve at this Saturday's competition.

The women's team will look for a strong performance from Elizabeth Setsuda, who will compete in the 100m dash, long jump and triple jump.

Another key athlete on Gallinger's squad is freshman javelin thrower, Jenna Fleming, who competed for the first time collegiately at the Blizzard Buster. In her Laker debut, Fleming set a new school record in with a throw of 45.16 meters, as she bested the previous LSSU record set by Jill Walton on May 1, 2008 (39.19m). The freshman will look to continue her success in the event this weekend as she has already provisionally qualified for Nationals in the event.
